The town of Hoi An is a bit different from other areas we have been in Vietnam. It is mostly clean, the sidewalks are wide, and it is filled with white people. In many aspects, it is like Disney World, but cheaper.
First, however, I simply had to post this picture from our journey up through the Hai Van pass. It's Greg taking a picture of a farmer while being hustled by a little girl. Greg's photo subjects always seem to be a bit greedy.
Back to Hoi An. We essentially planned our trip to coincide with this one day. Tonight was a full moon. Since the Vietnamese follow a lunar calendar, this is a very big day - and in Hoi An that means a lantern festival. The streets of old town are shut down to scooter traffic, and only candles and paper lanterns illuminate the town. Before it got completely dark, my eye was drawn to this vibrantly-dressed restaurant worker on break. I thought it made a good photo op, but you be the judge.
Though I had some difficulty getting the correct exposure for darkness/bright candles, I shot this brief time-lapse of paper lanterns floating down the river.
Stay tuned til tomorrow when we pick up our custom-tailored shirts!
